When deciding which digital audio cables to use, the studious observer will find that there are many options. A Google search for digital audio cables will provide a vast amount of resources for frequently asked questions (FAQ’s). In general, there are three options for connecting digital audio. These options, briefly: Toslink digital audio cables, 3.5 mm digital audio connections, and the more common RCA digital audio cables.
Toslink digital audio cables are most commonly found in home theater systems, Xbox, computers, and mini disk players. RCA digital audio cables are generally used in connections for digital video disk players (DVD), compact disk players (CD) and some surround sound systems. The 3.5 mm digital audio connection can be found in both fiber optic and the more common coax. This type of digital audio cable is used primarily in space limited applications. Until recently, the preferred delivery method for cable companies was through RCA coaxial cables. More and more companies are changing over to the Toslink digital audio cable (fiber optics). The main reason for this is the ability of fiber optic digital cables to carry data in the form of pulsating light, rather than electrical pulse. With the similarities of Toslink and RCA digital audio cables, came the Toslink converter box. This device enables the consumer to convert their RCA digital audio cables into Toslink from the entry point into the residence. Of course, as in seemingly everything cable, the consumer is responsible for the device, and it’s application. That said, check with your local cable company prior to installing this device. As in every situation, when you are unsure of yourself, consult a professional. A less than reputable salesperson may attempt you to baffle you with their ’insight’. It may take a degree or considerable experience in wiring and schematics to understand all the complexities of digital audio. However, knowing the basics of digital audio cables may hopefully help give you an edge in your discussion on the subject. |
