Benefits of a Waterproof Telescope Print E-mail
Sunday, 29 July 2007
If you are an avid astronomer, you may want to consider buying a waterproof telescope.  This way, you can mount the telescope anywhere, even outdoors, and leave it knowing that no inclement weather will damage the telescope.  Waterproof telescopes are a great way to enjoy astronomy with little worry about maintenance and care for your equipment. Waterproof telescopes are wonderful for both the amateur astronomer and the seasoned pro, because they require little maintenance.

If you have a telescope mounted on your patio or balcony, and it is waterproof, you don’t have to worry about a summer shower ruining the appearance or function of your equipment. Despite these obvious benefits, even with waterproof telescopes, do bring the telescope indoors in the event of a major thunderstorm.  If winds are high they could knock your telescope off of its mounting.  The water from a major storm won’t hurt your telescope, but high winds could cause damage, and any flying debris could crack the lenses of your waterproof telescope.

Waterproof telescopes are also a great purchase for children, because they won’t damage the telescope by leaving it outdoors, spilling anything on it, and so forth.  Waterproof telescopes tend to be built to be stronger and more rugged than traditional telescopes, so they are great for use by kids.  The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on a telescope, and have your son or daughter leave it outside in a sudden shower only to find the telescope unusable.  You won’t have this concern with a waterproof telescope.

In addition to a waterproof telescope, you may also want to consider a telescope that is portable.  The portability gives you a greater range of uses for your telescope.  You can, for example, take it on vacation and see a different view of the night sky with little effort, unlike a larger, mounted telescope.
