You finally did it. You finally achieved your lifelong dream of getting that signature on that game ball and that game ball into your home. The question is, what do you do with it now? You certainly can’t just set it up on a shelf somewhere. That would sacrilege, an insult to the greatness of the game. Such a treasure needs to be properly displayed. You are now faced with two options. Should you build your own display case or purchase one already made?
A word to the wise: building a proper display case is not extraordinarily difficult, but it is not extraordinarily simple either. If you often find yourself challenged in areas of home improvement or construction it may be wisest to simply purchase a display case and save yourself the headache. These can be purchased inexpensively through retail stores such as WalMart or through any number of online manufacturers. On the other hand, if you are an avid “do-it-yourselfer” and you have the tools handy it can be very rewarding to build your own display case. It would help tremendously if you were able to get your hands on the blueprints for the display case of your choice prior to beginning construction. If you have created your own design in your head and are determined to stick with it, it is still very helpful to draw up a blueprint in order to have some idea of the materials you are going to need. Unless you have glass and wood lying around you are going to need to purchase them. The cost of this can accumulate quickly; it is easiest on the wallet if you have some idea of the amount of each you are going to need prior to walking into the retailer (this also has the added advantage of being able to order the glass for the casing pre-cut to size; glass can be very difficult to work with). Cut the bottom, top and sides of your display case from the wood you have purchased per the measurements specified in your blueprints. Be sure to include the appropriate grooves in each to be able to attach your glass. After you have cut the wood, sand and stain it, allowing it to dry thoroughly. Then assemble the cabinet, ensuring that the corner joints fit snugly together and there are no rough edges. Voila! You have a display cabinet that is perfect for using your newly acquired possession to inspire envy in the hearts of your friends and neighbors. |
