Of the many new technologies to enter the television market in recent years, one of the most exciting must be HDTV. As this technology becomes more widespread, most TV channels – including the sports channels – are beginning to broadcast shows in HDTV format. So why is HDTV such a great technology for sports fans?
Well, it’s simple. No other current technology can offer the same picture quality and resolution as you can get with an HDTV broadcast. This is especially important for sports fans, as their enjoyment of a game can be greatly increased or greatly diminished by the quality of the picture. Remember back in the bad old days when you had to watch sports on tiny little screens? Even worse, you may be old enough to remember watching all your sports in black and white. While the athleticism and excitement of these sports may not have increased, the introduction of new technologies such as HDTV, LCD, and plasma screens sure has made our viewing experience more enjoyable. One of the strangest changes in our sports viewing habits in recent years has been that sense of competition about who has the best TV in our social group. These days, whenever there’s a big game on TV the question isn’t so much “Who’s going to win” as it is “Hey, where are we going to watch the game?” Sure it may be childish, but you’ll all fight for the privilege of hosting the game at your house – right in front of your big-screen HDTV. |
