Mini lamp shades are as adorable as the lamps they adorn. Placing several around the room allows for romantic, soft lighting with a playful touch. Although what is considered mini is a matter of opinion, there is a difference between small and miniature. A seven inch lamp shade is small; but compared to some of the huge shades on the market, it could be considered mini. A shade that is two and three-fourths inches tall would definitely fall into the miniature category.
There are mini lamp shades that cover light bulbs. Many mini shades cover candles. But there is no shortage of either in variety or availability. Unless you want your lamp to be unusual and out of proportion for artistic purposes, placing a shade on the lamp that is too big or too small is a negative idea when decorating a room. There may also be safety reasons as to why your lamp shade should match the recommended size for your lamp, such as the way the lamp shade hangs on the frame. A lamp shade needs the right air circulation around it to allow for the heat source used under its cover. There are fabrics that can become a fire hazard if used with the wrong strength of heat source or if used for extended periods of time with any heat source. Rawhide will become dry and brittle if not used and cared for properly. Paper shades must be treated with the right chemicals, such as fire retardants. If you decide to make your own mini lamp shades, please keep safety in mind no matter what material you use. Mini shades may be smaller, but they can still be dangerous if not used properly or treated properly. The harp used under the mini lamp shade to hold it away from the bulb is another consideration when choosing a mini lamp shade or when making your own. The more air circulation you get, the safer your choice will be. If you only plan to use your mini shade for short periods or for a night light with bulb wattage of seven, naturally you don’t have as much heat on the shade, so the harp choice could be safe regardless of the shape. |
