Portable cool mist humidifiers are used to increase moisture levels of the air inside the home. Cool mist humidifiers work through the use of a motor that forces water droplets into a mist which is then dispersed into the air. Cool mist humidifiers are the safest choice for those who have children in the household. Because the vapor from the machine is not heated, there is no risk of the child being accidentally burned should the water spill; or if the child places his or her face close to where the vapor escapes.
When used as directed, cool mist humidifiers are a safe product. However, if they are not properly cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis, they could contribute to additional breathing problems for people who suffer from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory ailments. The biggest drawback to cool mist humidifiers is that the cool water can be an excellent breeding ground for mold and bacteria. When using cool mist humidifiers it is crucial to follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Generally, daily cleaning of the water tank is required for all cool mist humidifiers. This involves washing the tank with soap and thoroughly rinsing with water. On average, this task takes between 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the size of the tank. Cool mist humidifiers have a tendency to disperse the minerals within tap water into the environment. The majority of tap water in the United States is treated with chlorine; necessary to eliminate bacteria and parasites. However, the chlorine vapors can be emitted through the mist of the humidifier. Minerals and chlorine fumes can lead to health problems. Therefore, it is recommended that only distilled water be used in cool mist humidifiers. When using a cool mist humidifier certain precautions should be adhered to. They include: * Clean and disinfect the water reservoir on a daily basis. Always follow the manufacturer's cleaning directions. Instructions may vary depending on the type of humidifier and frequency of use. * Always empty the water reservoir when not in use. * Always use distilled water. |
