What is a Blog Directory Print E-mail
Friday, 20 April 2007
If you own a blog and want more traffic, you'll want to use the services of a blog directory. A blog directory is similar to a telephone directory, in that it provides a list of blogs by name and by category. Each blog directory has its own set of rules. Some only allow blogs that fall into certain categories to be listed. Others require that a blog be active for 30 days or up to 6 months before you are allowed to submit to their blog directory.

Some require that a certain amount of posts must be made before submitting to the directory. Yet, others will let anyone submit their blog regardless of the category or amount of active posts. Getting listed in a blog directory is usually an easy process. For the most part you simply need to enter the title of your blog, URL, brief description, and contact information.

Oftentimes, blog directories request that you place a piece of code on your blog, with a link back to the blog directory. While it's not always required to include this code, it is a common courtesy to do so. After all, they are providing you with a free service to help drive traffic to your website. The least you can do is provide a link back to them.

Blog directories can also be used to locate blogs of similar interest, which you can exchange links with. In order to obtain a high ranking in the search engines, you need to have inbound links. This means getting other blog owners to link to your blog.

Some blog owners will link to your blog just because they like it and feel it offers value to their readers. Other blog owners will request a link exchange, meaning you link to their blog and they link to yours. When exchanging links with blog owners, it's best to link to reputable sites with common interests. Avoid linking to unscrupulous sites, as this can end up hurting your search engine ranking and could even get you blacklisted.

Many blog directories allow you to submit your blog for free, while others charge a nominal fee. Those who charge a fee, generally offer other beneficial services, such as automatic blog pinging or submission to other blog directories.

There are literally hundreds of blog directories. Simply type in "blog directory" at your favorite search engine and you're certain to find what you are looking for.
