The food service industry is one of the fastest growing employment industries in the United States. Working in the food service industry can provide you with many rewarding experiences and help you advance your career in Hospitality. There are numerous types of jobs available in the catering division of the food industry. One of the most reliable resources for locating catering jobs is via the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) website at www.nacejobs.com.

While there are catering jobs available for unskilled labor, most jobs in the catering industry require some form of formal culinary education. Generally, catering schools are a division within a culinary arts institute and focus primarily on catering, while providing core culinary classes.

The following is a list of the higher paying catering jobs and requirements needed to obtain them:

Banquet Manager: Banquet Managers are responsible for supervising, managing, and overseeing all aspects of banquet set-up and maintenance. Most employers require Banquet Managers to have experience as a Banquet Captain; a minimum of two years experience in a supervisory position; and 5 years experience in the food service industry. At minimum at high school degree or equivalent is required.

Catering Manager: Catering Managers are responsible for all aspects of catered events; as well as hiring, training, and scheduling catering staff members. They also work with clients and customers to arrange and follow through on all catering details and ensure special requests are met. Additional duties include: directing set-up and tear-down for events; menu and costing development; customer service; and pricing and billing. Most employers require a minimum of two years catering experience, including supervisory duties. At minimum a high school degree or equivalent is required.

Catering Sales Manager: Catering Sales Managers are responsible for obtaining new customers and building stronger relationships with past clients. They work directly with clients to develop event details and contracts, and with the marketing department of the catering business. Oftentimes, Catering Sales Managers are required to attend culinary trade shows and other events that could attract new business.

As a Catering Sales Manager, concise written and verbal communication skills are of the utmost importance. You will need to be able to train employees and educate clients, as well as make presentations in front of groups. Most employers prefer hiring individuals with a sales and marketing background, along with experience in the hospitality industry. At minimum a high school degree or equivalent is required. However, many companies prefer a 2 to 4 year college or culinary school degree.

Group Sales Manager: Group Sales Managers are similar to Catering Sales Manager with the exception they focus on obtaining larger accounts. Groups Sales Managers generally work with organizations such as Fortune 500 companies, cruise lines, airlines, and organizations that service large groups of people such as sporting event arenas, healthcare facilities, or education institutions.

Groups Sales Managers must be proficient at multi-tasking and able to work under tremendous pressure while meeting deadlines. To land this position, you'll need a BA/BS 4- to 5-year degree, and a minimum of five years experience in the hospitality industry.

Private Event Director: Private Event Directors are responsible for selling, planning, and coordinating all aspects of private events and meeting functions. From menu planning to working directly with clients and staff members, this position requires a person who is able to multi-task, meet deadlines, and be proficient in communication. At minimum a 2-year Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required, along with a minimum of two years experience in the food service industry.
