Three Tips On How To Keep A Turkey Deep Fryer Safe Print E-mail
Saturday, 11 August 2007
Turkey deep fryer's are always thought of as a holiday treat. Mom or Dad frying up the bird for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner is always a fond memory for me. However, if we were not careful, we could have easily been seriously hurt or worse – the house could have burned down. These scenarios may sound unrealistic, but the sad truth is that the risk is all to real – which is why I have decided to share with you the same tips I was given by my father on keeping my own turkey deep fryer safe.

The first rule of turkey deep fryer safety is to never leave the turkey deep fryer unattended. Doing so is just tempting the fates of chance to spoil your holiday or special occasion. Some things that can happen to an unattended turkey deep fryer are having the fryer tip over by a strong wind gust, wildlife or neighbor's pets. Nature could 'add to the mix' by placing dead leaves and other nasty items in the hot oil. Even having the oil boil over and ignite the gas flame could occur when not watching the turkey deep fryer.

Which leads us to rule number two: Always keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher nearby. Never, ever try putting out an oil fire with water – the water will rapidly heat up and fire back at you, causing severe burning. If you are lucky enough not to get burned, the other scenario and that you spread the flames because water and fire don't mix. So when using your turkey deep fryer, make the extra investment in a fire extinguisher that has been checked to work. You will be glad you did.

And talking about pets, when using your turkey deep fryer, always watch your pets and children. Both are very curious and if they get to close when you're not paying attention, severe injuries and sometimes death can occur. Instead of allowing this to even be a possibility, try to make sure another adult is available to watch the children and any outdoor pets while you take the responsibility to watch your turkey deep fryer.

Before I leave you, I would like to give you a bonus tip: Always, and I mean always, wait until your turkey is 100% thawed before placing it in the hot oil! If you do not head my words, you will find that this simple bubbling pot of oil becomes like a ticking time bomb. The moment that frozen turkey with it's ice crystals touches the oil in your turkey deep fryer, the oil will foam and bubble rapidly, quickly shooting straight up at you causing burning and other injuries. Please, make sure that your bird is fully thawed, and you will be sure to experience a succulant turkey like no other!
