Casinos have always used poker chips that are of the highest quality.  These chips are usually clay or ceramic.  Players who have used poker chips of this quality may not be happy using lesser quality chips.  As a result, the demand for casino quality poker chips remains high and owners of used poker chips are not likely to sell them.  Actual casino used poker chips are destroyed due to safety concerns.

Some sellers of high quality poker chip sets allow customers to turn in their used poker chips for a trade-in credit toward their purchase of a new poker chip set.  This offer is made by only a select few Internet based poker supply sites.

The only real used poker chips market is for those chips that considered collectible.  Many used poker chips from the early to mid 1900s are popular among collectors who will pay top dollar for specific used poker chips.  The same is true of special edition poker chips given away as promotional items by companies.

Additionally, many gamblers bring home a used poker chip that was not cashed in after a casino visit.  These used poker chips, if sold, are not available in sets and are worth the value stamped on them if returned to the casino.  They are not an inexpensive way to acquire used poker chips.

Used poker chips that were once owned by celebrities also have a great resale value.  Used poker chips from World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour events are also valued among collectors and bring top dollar.

Because of the limited availability of used poker chips it is not common to find a good deal on them.
