Overview of Home Humidifiers Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 May 2007
Home humidifiers are an appliance that adds moisture to the air inside a home. They are used during the winter months or in exceptionally dry environments. People who experience respiratory problems, such as asthma or severe allergies oftentimes benefit from the use of a home humidifier. Humidifiers can help prevent winter infections and alleviate symptoms of cold, flu, and asthma. Maintaining proper humidity levels can also help relieve sinus pains, sore throats, and itchy eyes. Humidifiers can prevent dry skin and chapped lips.

There are three types of house humidifiers available: Tabletop, Console and Whole Home.

Tabletop humidifiers are the least expensive and are used to add moisture to a single room. Tabletop humidifiers have small water tanks that need to be filled more frequently than console units. There are two types of tabletop humidifiers: evaporative and warm-mist.

Evaporative models use a fan that blows over a wick. The wick system uses a paper, cloth or foam wick or sheet to draw water out of the reservoir. Evaporative models tend to be noisier than warm-mist humidifiers.

Warm-mist models usually involve the use of a heating element in the humidifier that heats the water before dispersing in into the air. Due to the addition of the heating element, warm-mist models tend to be more costly to operate than evaporative models.

When shopping for a tabletop humidifier, look for a unit that is easy to carry, fill, clean, and offers ease in wick replacement. Also look for easy-to-use controls and units that offer automatic programming. Tabletop house humidifiers range in price between $20 and $100.

Console humidifiers work like evaporative humidifiers to humidify the entire home. Console humidifiers utilize larger tanks and do not require as much refilling as tabletop humidifiers. Console humidifiers are efficient at adding moisture to several rooms. They can be placed unobtrusively in a corner or behind a piece of furniture.

Whole home humidifiers are installed in the ductwork, next to the furnace and add humidity to the entire home. Whole home humidifiers can only be used with forced-air heat.

Whole home humidifiers are the most expensive to purchase; however, they are relatively inexpensive to operate. Starting at around $100, whole home humidifiers are durable units that will last several years if properly maintained.
