Joining APAGS as a Psychology Student Print E-mail

Students who are enrolled in psychology degree programs can join APA, and if they are a graduate student when they join will be automatically enrolled as a member of APAGS.  APAGS offers all of its members the opportunity to enhance their development towards a career in psychology while they are enrolled in a psychology degree programs.  APAGS has several thousand members, and is one of the largest constituency groups of the APA, as well as being the largest group of students enrolled in graduate psychology degree programs worldwide.

Members of APAGS are entitled to many benefits that will aid them while they are enrolled in psychology degree programs.  These include subscriptions to American Psychologist, Monitor on Psychology, and the APAGS magazine, gradPSYCH.  They receive a ten dollar credit for subscriptions to APA Journals.  They can purchase access to the APA’s online database, internship and career resources, scholarships and awards for students are who are enrolled at least half of their time as a student, and information resources created by and for students.

APAGS is considered to be the voice of student concerns within the APA.  The group is responsible for developing, endorsing, and disseminate information to students that is relative to their psychology degree programs, legislative positions, and future directions or chances in their fields. APAGS was founded in 1988, and is governed by nine elected APAGS members who act as officers, along with the support of five specialized subcommittees.  The nine APAGS officers include: a Chair, Past-Chair and Chair-Elect, as well as six Members at Large who have particular drive and focus for advocacy and representation.  They strive to promote the highest standards in research, teaching, and practice of psychology while representing all graduate study specialties and promoting student leadership development.  The subcommittees include:  Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA), Advocacy Coordinating Team (ACT), and Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns (CLGBTC), and APAGS Convention Committee.

To join APAGS, you must complete and sign the application form, mark the journals that you want to order, and return the form to APA with your total payment.  For graduate students there is an annual fee of $50.  Undergraduates can join APAGS for an additional $23 over their standard enrollment dues.  Once your fee is received and application accepted, your subscriptions will be processed.  Affiliation is one calendar year from January to December, and you will receive an invoice each year when it is time to renew.  Applications accepted between January 1st and August 31st will start to receive subscriptions with the next available issue, and any previously published issues for the year will also be sent.  For applications accepted between September 1st and December 31st, the subscriptions will begin with the next available issue and continue through the following calendar year.
