How to Make Lamp Shades Print E-mail
Monday, 13 August 2007
Before you make a lamp shade there are some things to consider.  What type of décor are you reaching for?  What functions will the lamp have that will hold the shade?  How big does your shade need to be?  What types of resources are available for making your lamp shade?  How much money do you wish to spend on your creation?  How soon do you need to finish the lamp shade?  How much effort do you wish to spend on your project?  If you are a beginner at crafting or even at making lamp shades, you may fare better by starting with a kit for beginners.

Lamp shade learning kits can be purchased at prices from $9 to $33 that include all the necessary materials for completing your shade, except the lamp stand itself.  Your imagination is the only limit to how you adorn your lamp shade.  Free instructions are available on the internet.  You can find instructions for making your own rawhide, botanicals, wrap-arounds, panels, pierced tin, faux mica, and cloth shades.

Lampshade wire rings for luminary shades from 5” to 7” sell for $7 to $12.  Shopping around for your supplies is a good idea because of the price differences.  You may also be lucky enough to find clearance sales on items you could use to make your lamp shades.  Craft shops are not the only places to find supplies.  You only need to get your creativity flowing.

Self-adhesive lamp shades are available that have an adhesive base to press your fabric to.  Then you add the trims or embellishments of your choice.  Lamp shade kits are available for children and adults alike.  It would be a great home school art project and a way to make memories with your child that can stay in your home for years.

Chandelier lamp shade kits with beaded fringe look nice and only take up to an hour to craft.  These kits are usually for covering the shades you already have. Faux mica is made using fiberglass material and metallic spray paints.  You can dry your own leaves or flowers to add to your lampshade.  You can cut your own material patterns from cloths of your choice.  You can even learn to make your own mini shades.
