Donts when you asking for a raise Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 August 2006

Don’ts: Remember to keep a calm tone of your voice when and if your boss arguments to your raise at first. Try remembering also that he or she is paying you to do a certain job and you’re asking for a higher amount for the same job. Try listening more than demand, be professional and polite at all times. For example, if your supervisor simply doesn’t award you with the award you want, they might give you a hint on how to earn it. If they don’t hint, don’t be afraid to ask how you can improve yourself into earning it.

Threats with quitting the current job if you don’t get the raise, or telling your boss that you have a better job offer should only be applied if you actually do. Instead, maybe your boss will simply call your bluff and let you go.

Don’t go around the bush with your request, try to be straightforward an confident. The supervisor hired you because he thought you were the best qualified thing that makes you a valuable member of the team. Bring any "Thank you" notes from customers or letters because they might help as well by cementing your request, and working as a reminder with your supervisor regarding your role within the company.

Don’t think that talking negatively about your coworkers or by comparing to them you will be brought in a positive light because this shows that if you have a poor attitude toward your colleagues, you shall keep the same poor attitude even if you are promoted.

Tact, professionalism, confidence are the most important factors. If the boss seems stubborn and does not want to give you the raise you are asking for, try opening his mind to consider you to volunteer to do more at the office. Help another team on a critical project, or stay an extra hour, because it helps proving that you really want to work for the money you want to receive. Good luck!.
