How can my dog successfully complete dog potty training? Unlike cats, dogs do not come with that virtually instinctual ability to know when and where to go to the bathroom. However, it is typically very easy for an individual to learn how to successfully and properly train a dog to go to the bathroom outside and to inform their owner when they need to be taken outside. It is not a smart idea to punish a dog for going to the bathroom inside the house if the animal does attempt to let the owner know prior to making a mess in the home.
Unfortunately, there are some times when owners are busy and for some reason cannot take the dog out right then. This should not be common practice, but mistakes do happen – on the part of the owner and the animal. Say NO sternly, but do not punish the animal, otherwise they may associate trying to inform the owner with something bad. Then they may make more well hidden messes in the house. Praise the dog when he does go to the bathroom outside. For a while, this will require that the individual walk the dog and not just let the dog outside on its own to use the bathroom. They need to know that they did the right thing. Verbal praise and snacks are acceptable forms of making sure that the animal knows that it did a good job by going to the bathroom outside. In addition, when a dog is left alone during the day or night, it is advisable to allow them to go to the bathroom on potty training pads for dogs. These can be bought at pet supply stores, or an individual can use newspaper laid down as well. Let the dog know it is alright to go to the bathroom in that area if they need to when they are alone. Keep in mind that potty training for dogs is a process and patience is required! Before long, your dog will be educated and you will be a successful trainer. |
