Does Online Tutoring Work Print E-mail
Monday, 13 August 2007
In today’s internet driven world, you can do almost anything online.  One question that parents often have is whether or not online tutoring can actually help their kids. If your son or daughter is struggling in school, you may be considering how to help him or her improve their grades and self-esteem.  Tutoring is a great solution, and there are many different types of tutoring available.  You can use a local tutor such as a retired teacher or current college student who wants to make some extra money.  You can choose a chain tutoring service. Or, you can select online tutoring.

Online tutoring has both positives and negatives, and as a parent you should be aware of both before you make a decision to enroll your child in an online tutoring program.  First, online tutoring can be a good choice for a particularly busy family.  Online tutoring sessions can occur from the comfort of your own home, at grandma’s house, or at the local library.  All you need to make online tutoring work is a computer, which gives your family a great deal of flexibility.

However, online tutoring won’t work for all kids.  If your child needs personal interaction beyond what can be derived from an internet connection, online tutoring isn’t the best option.  You can make this determination by talking to your child’s teacher.  Ask what seems to work best for your child – does he perform better in groups, or is he happier working alone?  Does your child like to talk to the teacher, or does he prefer to write down answers to a quiz?  If your child likes having time to think things through alone, he or she may be a great candidate for online tutoring.  If your child responds best to interaction with a group or with the teacher, an in person tutor may work best.

One area where online tutoring universally is good for kids is for those situations where your child needs only reinforcement of an idea and extra practice.  Online games, tutoring sessions, and practice worksheets can be a great tool to help your child truly grasp difficult concepts.  Practice, after all, does make perfect.
