Charity Yard Sale Print E-mail
Saturday, 04 August 2007
The old adage, “one man's trash is another man's treasure”, was adapted from Matthew 13:31 – 33 and is especially relevant when discussing charity yard sales.  Charity yard sales are a great way to make money by selling items that people already want to get rid of to people who want or need the items. Fundraising organizers can ask friends, neighbors, and other group members to donate the stuff they may no longer want but is still in good condition. Most people have items around the house that they are more than willing to donate for a good clause and to eliminate clutter.

If the organization has storage space they can accept donations year round to be used for periodic sales and if an item doesn’t move at one sale it can be stored until the next
Inexpensive flyers and free space in the community news sections of local newspapers can provide good advertisement for a charity yard sale.  Always make sure to emphasis the organization and if possible specific the use of the funds.  For example, the funds may be used for a school band trip, new playground equipment, or a children’s advocate group make sure and advertise the use of the funds.

It sounds unethical but always overprice items and encourage people to barter prices down because some people enjoy the idea of  bargaining and those that don’t will be only to happy to pay a little more for a good cause.

Include flyers or printed receipts with the purchase that thank the purchaser and direct them to websites or phone numbers to further information.  It might also be a good time to ask them to fill out information surveys and collect e-mail and mailing addresses for a fundraising database.

Remember to sell refreshments and if possible ask a local musical group to perform at a discreet distance placing a tip jar at the stage for additional funds.  If you can get a local restaurant to donate a dinner out for raffle then you can generate more donations and gain information for your fundraising database.

Ask for volunteers and donations about a month in advance and good luck.
