Catering Menus Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 July 2007
Nearly every caterer offers a variety of preset catering menus of the foods they offer. Some specialize in certain types of foods such as Greek or Italian. Others offer a wide range of options including traditional foods to gourmet dishes. If you are planning a corporate or social event and will be using the services of a professional caterer, this article can help you better understand the different types of catering menus.

Basically, there are three types of catering menus: Banquet, Pick-up, and Delivery.

Banquet menus are the most common form used in the catering industry. This type of menu is used to help you determine the types of foods served at your event. They include breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus; fruit and vegetable trays; and dessert menus.

Typically, you will select two or more meat entrees, two or more vegetable side dishes; one or more starch side dishes such as potatoes or rice; a variety of breads; and drinks from a banquet catering menu.

Banquet menus will vary depending on where the food is being served. For instance, if you are hosting an outdoor BBQ, your menu needs will be quite different than what would be served at a wedding or anniversary celebration.

Typically, catering services will provide you with menus targeted toward the type of event you are hosting. Oftentimes, they will work with you to create a customized menu.

Pick-up catering menus are used if you plan to pick-up foods at the caterer's place of business. Typically, these types of menus offer a variety of cold foods such as sandwiches, fruit and vegetable trays, and desserts.

You would want to use a pick-up catering menu if your event is casual. These menus work well for events that are hosted outdoors such as company picnics or family retreats. Pick-up catering menus also work well for casual events which are hosted indoors such as a baby shower or graduation party.

Delivery catering menus are used if you plan to have the catering service deliver foods to your event. This usually involves some set-up and tear-down; particularly if you are serving hot foods. Some caterers will serve hot foods in disposable aluminum trays, as opposed to serving them in chafers fueled by Sterno. This eliminates the need to clean and return the chafers. The only downside to this is that you may not have a way to reheat or retain the heat of hot foods.

The majority of caterer's offer a wide range of options to suit their clients' needs. Shop around and obtain a minimum of three price quotes before making your final decision. Review all of the menus to determine which caterer offers foods that best suit your needs and your budget.
