Caring for Felt Cowboy Hats Print E-mail
Friday, 20 July 2007
When spending money to buy nice felt cowboy hats, it’s important to care for them properly. Yes, there are right and wrong ways to handle and care for felt cowboy hats. First of all it’s essential to make sure your hands are free of excess oils, dirt or dust. These things could definitely soil felt cowboy hats. When picking up your hat, the first instinct is probably to grab the crown. Felt cowboy hats should be picked up by the brim, placed on the head and adjusted by the back and front of the brim.

Proper storing of felt cowboy hats is essential if trying to avoid warping and losing shape. If not wearing your felt hat it should be stored in its original packaging and box upside down. If you do not have the original box it’s important, wherever you store it to make sure it’s placed upside down. However if storing felt hats on proper hat stands, then and only then should they be stored right side up. It’s also essential to remember not to store felt hats in hot places such as in the car, near a heater, etc., since the heat will likely shrink the sweat band which will ultimately change the size of the hat.

When felt cowboy hats get wet there are certain rules to consider when drying them. It’s important to carefully reshape the hat; the rounded parts, the dents and turn up the brim if it was turned down. Another wise thing to do is to turn the sweat band inside out and actually stand the hat on the sweat band up right. Felt cowboy hats need time to dry and the process should not be rushed by using heat sources such as blow-dryers. Once felt cowboy hats have completely dried, they should be then carefully reshaped to their original form.
