Advantages and Disadvantages of a Wooden Bird Feeder Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 July 2007
When first buying a bird feeder, many people opt for the wooden bird feeder. This is likely because of their appearance. The wood look makes the bird feeder coincide with the natural wood in the outdoors. A wooden bird feeder can be personalized and made to look like the individual’s actual house. A wooden bird feeder can be decorated nicely and used also as a garden ornament. A wooden bird feeder has advantages which include providing a large area to place bird seed.

This means the need for refilling will less. A second advantage of a wooden bird feeder is the housing protects the seed from weather such as snow, wind and rain. If choosing a cedar wooden bird feeder, it will last for years and so the need for bird feeder replacements will be limited. Another great feature of this type of bird feeder is they are usually accessible to both large and small birds. When buying a wooden bird feeder, the customer will be impressed with these definite advantages.

Although a wooden bird feeder may be the first choice when shopping and it may have many advantages, it also has disadvantages. Squirrels will have a field day with a wooden bird feeder. Squirrels love wood and with their sharp teeth they could certainly destroy a wooden bird feeder. In this case the main thing is to make sure the feeder is inaccessible to squirrels or protected with a mesh wire protective cage, a squirrel guard or baffle. A second disadvantage of a wooden bird feeder is the frequent need for cleaning. This type of feeder provides great protection from the elements but when water does collect in it, the seed can become moldy.

A wooden bird feeder can be a lovely addition to your garden or patio. It’s important however, before buying one to weigh the pros and cons to decide if this is in fact the best type of bird feeder for you.

I found a great site which talks about a birdfeeder. As per me A bird feeder, or bird table is a device placed out-of-doors

to supply bird food to birds. They also describe some details on how to build a birdfeeder.
