What is Prostate Cancer Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 May 2007
When the cells of the prostate gland began to grow uncontrollably prostate cancer occurs. When caught and treated early, there is a cure rate of over 90%. Being diagnosed with prostate cancer is life–altering. After diagnosis there will be some difficult decisions about treatment that will affect the patient, as well as, his family in many ways for years to come.

More than 200,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and each will need to make very personal decisions about treatment. Each patient will need to find a strong and knowledgeable team of physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers who know about the treatment of prostate cancer to help him through the step–by–step process. The symptoms of prostate cancer are:
* The need for frequent urination, especially at night.
* Difficulty starting or holding back urine.
* Weak or interrupted urine flow.
* Pain of burning during urination.
* Difficult achieving or maintaining an erection.
* Painful ejaculation.
* The appearance of blood in urine or semen.
* Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

Because these symptoms also indicate the presence of other diseases and disorders, men with these symptoms will require a thorough work–up to determine what is causing the symptoms. Nutrition plays a big part in staying healthy. The effects of dietary and lifestyle changes on the development and progression of prostate cancer are being explored by leading researchers in the field. Researchers have been looking at which foods have been shown to be helpful for prostate cancer patients, what foods and nutrients that might prevent the onset of or delay a recurrence of prostate cancer. The Taste For Living Cookbook used by Mike Milken, a prostate cancer survivor, and published by The Prostate Cancer Foundation has popular recipes formulated to help fight prostate cancer.
