What Can I Do For Prostate Cancer Prevention Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 May 2007
Disease of any type has a great deal to do with your mental outlook, the amount of stress in your life, the foods you eat, and the amount of exercise you get. Researchers have found direct links to nutrition and prostate cancer. Certain drugs, vitamins and minerals may be able to reduce your risk of prostate cancer. This is called chemoprevention. Current research does not support the use of any drug or supplement for the prevention of prostate cancer. Several chemical agents show potential benefits.

There has been no link found between obesity and prostate cancer. There is some data that suggests obesity might affect hormone levels related to prostate cancer. To avoid becoming obese you need to follow guidelines for a healthy diet, talk to your doctor to figure out a plan for physical activity and a nutritional plan, and perform vigorous exercise at least 30 minutes every day to jump start your metabolism and help you burn fat and calories.

The highest rate of prostate cancer seems to be directly related to the amount of fat in the diet. In some studies indicate a diet high in vegetables help to lower the risk of prostate cancer. One study found that men who ate 28 or more servings of vegetables each week had lower rates of prostate cancer than those who ate less than 14 servings. Another study showed prostate cancer was 2 to 3 times more common in men who ate moderate to large amounts of fish. The  types of fish shown to protect against prostate cancer and other diseases include salmon, herring and mackerel.

There are no set guidelines for prostate cancer when it comes to nutrition. As a general rule you should:
* Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
* Reduce intake of saturated fat and cholesterol.
* Limit sweets and salt.
* Drink alcoholic beverages in moderation, if at all.
* Eat moderate portions and control calories.

Researchers have lately suggested that tomatoes containing lycopene, can lower the risk of getting prostate cancer. Studies show that the more tomatoes in a persons diet, the less possibility of developing prostate cancer.
