Prostate Cancer Symptoms Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 May 2007
It is very important to realize that not every man with prostate cancer has symptoms and these symptoms are not a sure indication that prostate cancer is present. Prostate cancer symptoms are:

* Urinary problems – unable to urinate, the need to urinate often (especially at night), problems starting or stopping the flow of urine, a weak flow of urine, burning or pain during urination, urine flow that starts and stops.
* Difficulty having and maintaining an erection.
* The appearance of blood in the urine or semen.
* Frequent pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

Quite often these symptoms are not due to cancer, but are caused by an infection or other health problem. Even so they should be checked out by a Urologist. More than 200,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States this year. Early detection and treatment will see over a 90% cure rate. There are a few nutritional guidelines that research has found to be beneficial in the prevention of prostate cancer. The guidelines are not defined but the following is a base for good nutrition.

* Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
* Reduce the intake of saturated fat and cholesterol.
* Limit the intake of sweets and salt.
* Drink alcohol beverages in moderation.
* Eat moderate size portions and control calories.

A regular check–up is crucial to staying healthy. If cancer is found early it is highly treatable. It is also good to know that African American men are especially at risk. According to the National Cancer Institute, black males are 35% more likely than white males to develop prostate cancer and are 2 to 3 times more likely to die from the disease.

Surgery to remove the prostate is the most popular form of treatment for prostate cancer. If the nerves that control erections must be removed during surgery, a man will become impotent. Some surgeons are now using grafts with small nerves taken from the side of the foot. This procedure is still experimental. Better technology makes it possible to aim radiation on the prostate gland and any cancer just outside the gland. This is a more precise treatment for prostate cancer. Researchers are studying newer forms of treatment for this disease.
