Sunday, 03 June 2007
In a society which seems to praise women for being little more than a stick and where the rich and famous have svelte forums that leaves the average women feeling like a lump of yesterday's garbage fad dieting has become all the rage.  The opportunity for a woman to lose weight quickly is often too hard to pass up; however, the consequences of these diets may be devastating.  Now, with the detox diet which is quickly becoming the rage among Hollywood darlings, average women can enjoy rapid weight loss without many of the detrimental side effects.

As in drug detoxification the purpose of the detox diet is to purge the body of its toxins.  The purging of these toxins serves to allow the organs of the body to better function and the body's metabolism to more quickly process consumed calories.  A detox diet generally consists of water, fruits and vegetables (including juices, which may be used in juice fasting for the purpose of allowing the body to have more energy for detoxification), food combining, which focuses on the time that a food is consumed rather than its quantity or quality, and caloric restriction.

For those interested in such things there are also herbal detoxification methods available such as red beet, liverwort, parsley, horsetail, birch leaves, chamomile, blessed thistle, black cohosh, angelica, gentian, goldenrod and comfrey.  It is not recommended that these herbal remedies the years as the sole means of detoxification, however, as maximum results cannot be achieved without making the necessary dietary changes.

Detoxification diets are not without their critics, particularly in the instance of the much publicized “lemonade diet” by Stanley Burroughs. Many detoxification diets do not provide all of the necessary nutrients the body needs to continue to function and, consequently, can be very harmful if continued for extended periods of time. It is always wise to consult with a physician before entering into a diet plan, particularly one that would require such a drastic lifestyle change, in order to way the potential benefits against the possible harmful side effects.
