Licorice and Natural Approaches to Treat Acid Reflux Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 May 2007
Lifestyle changes and medication are a necessary part of the daily routine for millions of acid reflux sufferers.  Depending on the severity of the condition, many people resort to natural alternatives to medication.  Licorice is commonly used to treat many of the symptoms that include throat aggravation and irritation, and can help neutralize stomach acids in the process.

Licorice root has been used for various medicinal purposes, and can be found in a licorice tea, chewable tablets, or a tincture made with a combination of herbal remedies.  Licorice tea can me made by mixing a teaspoon of licorice root in boiling water.  After removing from heat, a couple of teaspoons of dried chamomile can be added before straining and drinking.  Licorice tea should never be used if you have a condition of high blood pressure, as this can cause an adverse reaction.

Other natural approaches include eating a low fat diet, allowing plenty of time for food to digest properly, and taking a digestive pancreatic enzyme.  Ginger can also help with digestion and the absorption of food.  Bloating and indigestion are commonly caused by an inadequate supply of stomach acid, and is the key contributor to ulcer problems.  Excess weight, especially in the abdomen area, can cause chronic heartburn and digestive discomfort.  Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can minimize the effects and symptoms of acid reflux disease, and can help to digest food overall.

Eliminating stomach irritants can mean adopting a preventative acid reflux diet.  Common irritants include tobacco, ibuprofen, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and coffee or tea.  Even peanuts and other nut-based products can serve as a trigger of an acid reflux episode.  Cooling foods include cucumbers, natural water-based fruits and vegetables, and plenty foods that are low in spices.  If irritating foods are consumed, licorice tea or pieces of licorice root can help minimize the impact.
