If a patient shows signs and symptoms of Lung Cancer, the following steps would be procedures to make a diagnosis of the condition. Diagnosing a cancer long involves several different tests beginning with a physical examination. A physical exam will help the physician to detect swollen lymph nodes in the collarbone and/or neck area. Swollen lymph nodes are typical with various types of cancer including a cancer lung. A chest examination is also essential and with the aid of a stethoscope the doctor can listen for evidence of abnormal breathing patterns or strange sounds.
Besides actual physical exams, diagnosing a cancer lung involves a series of x-rays which provide pictures that can help detect abnormal growths. While an x-ray gives a flat image of the lungs, a CT scan or CAT scan provides a two-dimensional image of the lungs. The CT scan is much more revealing than x-rays. New technology in the form or helical scans or spiral scans are proving to be even more effective in diagnosing a cancer lung than regular CT scans.Other tools for diagnosing a cancer lung include a PET scan or Position Emission Tomography which locates tumors through traces of radioactive sugar. A MRI or Magnetic Resonance Image is also beneficial when diagnosing a cancer lung. A Sputum Cytology is often used where the individual’s sputum is examined with a microscope and checked for abnormal cells. A Bronchoscopy, which allows doctors to view the lungs through a hollow, flexible tube, is threaded through the nose and throat to the main airways of the lung. Using this method, a Biopsy can be performed which removes lung tissue to be tested when diagnosing a cancer lung. These exams and procedures are intended for tasks such as diagnosing a cancer lung. Before any steps can be taken to treat a cancer lung, a definite diagnosis must be made. These tests and procedures are essential in determining the stage the cancer lung has reached. Once this screening process is complete, the appropriate course of treatment is decided. |
