Educational Background of a Financial Advisor Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 September 2007
When you think of someone who works as a financial advisor you wonder what his or her educational background is. Most financial advisors have extensive backgrounds with bachelors’ degrees in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business, Marketing, and Sociology, but usually these degrees are supplemented with graduate level degrees in the fields that someone got as an undergrad.

Many people who do want to be financial advisors are advised to enter college with a dual bachelors and masters programs so they can finish both degrees concurrently to cut the time down from spending in school by 2 years since the average program is about 5 years since realistically it would be about 7 years so many colleges and universities are shortening specific programs such as those in finance to 5 years if it’s a bachelors and masters dual program. Then comes in the internships at financial firms to fulfill the degree requirements and then spending a lot of time working to build experience and to build up credentials so when the time comes to apply for a job you will come on board with experience and training.

Some of those people who worked in the field for a while is in fact going back to school for graduate level degrees since the job positions are changing so fast which means now many financial advisors have to be certified and licensed since in this day and age certification and licensure is to ensure that whoever works in this profession has underwent the schooling and training to be in a field to work with people’s money or handling of large scale financial needs for corporations or individuals needing someone to oversee their specific needs of their financial affairs. Too many issues with corrupt business dealings is what lead many states who oversee licensure and certification of professions to require such a license issued by the National Association of Securities Dealers and also have to be registered with the Securities and Exchanges commission along with your respective state license to operate a firm. Financial planners also have some background in law so you will find some attorneys who are financial planners to be able to discuss legal matters with their clients.

If you are planning to teach students who are going to be financial planners or someone working in the financial field you would consider a doctorate program in Accounting, Finance, Economics, and Business to teach undergrad and masters level programs for those who are wanting to enter the field as financial advisors or are currently registered and licensed financial advisors who are seeking to increase their skill levels up with an advanced degree. Most professors who teach are financial planners or have a background in finance and banking to teach college and university undergrad and/or masters level courses for students or those already established as financial advisors to get an advanced degree or certification in the field. This is pretty intense since financial planners normally don’t have a lot of time outside of school since they have so much reading and writing out papers and in some programs have to assemble full working business plans to present as a class project at the end of the semester or quarter as a part of his or her final exam.
