The Blue Man Group is a creative and extremely entertaining organization centered on a trio of mute performers, aptly called Blue Men. The Blue Men that comprise The Blue Man Group are presented as friendly creatures that are appear to be male human beings and are outfitted in costumes of blue grease paint, latex bald caps, and black clothing. The strongest and most obvious Blue Man characteristic is his fixed appearance, in particular the earless bright blue head and face and nondescript practical clothing.
In motion, The Blue Man Group members do not speak and their faces are usually expressionless, although suggestions of surprise, sarcasm and curiosity can often be found only through careful observation of the eyebrows and eyes of The Blue Men. Rather than communicating with the audience through speech or broad body language, The Blue Man Group communicates through the use of music, props, lighting simple body gestures and intense eye contact. Each individual member of the trio acts spontaneously and as a carefully coordinated group of three. A Blue Man will seemingly instinctively check with the other two Blue Men before making their next move or decision. Each member of the Blue Man Group is also mysteriously motivated to drum. The outwardly apparent incentives of The Blue Man Group are often presented in mild distortion in order to make a humorous or ironic point to the audience. Performances by The Blue Man Group incorporate percussion emphasized rock music, audience participation, unusually unique props, spectacular lighting-and enormous amounts of paper! The shows are intended to entertain audiences of all ages and are energetic and often satirical about the challenges of modern life. Loyal followers of The Blue Man Group can be found in the ‘poncho’ section of the audience, in the front rows, where they are provided with ponchos plastic ponchos to protect them from the various paints, foods and substances that may be sprayed, ejected or thrown from the stage! |
