Comparing Top Makers of Screenplay Formatting Software Print E-mail
Saturday, 21 April 2007

If you are a budding screenwriter looking for good screenplay formatting software, the choices can be confusing. There are many options for screenplay formatting software on the market today, with three main titles that are worth exploring. In addition to screenplay formatting software, you may also wish to consider story development software, which keeps track of your source materials, character and plot development, and other aspects of the creative writing process.

The benefit of screenplay formatting software is that it helps you with some of the most tedious parts of writing a screenplay.  Scripts need to be laid out with very specific margins and style, or agents and studios won't even read them.  Screenplay formatting software products are essentially specialized word-processors that do all of this automatically, making it quick and easy to write in proper format, without any extra time or thought on the part of the writer.

The three most popular formatters are Movie Magic Screenwriter, Final Draft, and Hollywood Screenwriter.  Each of these is a screenplay formatting software application, and any can help a new writer.  They do have pros and cons, however.

Movie Magic and Final Draft are virtually identical, with the same features, and each has big stars and directors endorsing them.  They are the only two "preferred file formats" according to the Writer's Guild.  Each can import the other's file format.

Whenever one gets a new feature, the other adds it at the next upgrade.  The only big difference is the "look and feel" of the working environment, so you really can't go wrong with either of these screenplay formatting softwares.

Hollywood Screenwriter is made by the same company that makes Movie Magic.  It is the "basic" version of Movie Magic, including all of the necessary features, but none of the fancy and flashy ones.  The big advantage is that is costs more than $100 less than either Movie Magic or Final Draft.
