All About Plastic Poker Chips Print E-mail
Saturday, 04 August 2007
The price and quality of poker chips is dependant upon the material used to construct the chip.  Plastic poker chips are the least expensive type of poker chips.  While ceramic and clay composite poker chips are classified as better chips, plastic poker chips work just as well for less money. In the 1950s plastic poker chips became common.  These chips are completely plastic and bring back memories of the home card parties.  Everyone seems to have a set of these ridged chips sitting on a closet shelf somewhere.

Today plastic poker chips are found at discount stores, drug stores and even dollar stores.  They are durable and well suited to occasional home games or benefit tournaments.  Unfortunately many poker players are not happy using this style of plastic poker chips.  They weigh only a few grams, do not stack well, do not work for chip tricks and they make a cheap plastic sound when thrown together.

Plastic poker chips made from an ABS composite are plastic and do not contain any clay.  Often retailers label composite plastic poker chips as clay and sell them to unsuspecting customers.  A composite chip must contain some clay in order to be called a clay chip but retailers are not always honest with their customers.  Plastic poker chips made of the ABS composite are comparable to clay poker chips in weight.  Most composite plastic poker chips have a metal insert that is not visible but helps add weight to the chip.  Plastic poker chips offer benefits that make them preferable to clay.  The ABS composite used for plastic poker chips makes them more durable than clay chips.  Because of the hardness of the composite used in them, plastic poker chips have sharper image designs.  Best of all, plastic poker chips are cheaper to purchase than their clay counterparts.

Only poker players familiar with using the more expensive clay poker chips or casino quality chips may be unhappy with plastic poker chips.  Some players find that the slicker finish of plastic poker chips prevents them from stacking as well as clay.  Others do not like the sound the chips make.

Plastic poker chips offer a more affordable option to poker players.  While cheap plastic poker chips are seldom preferred, ABS composite plastic poker chips will please nearly every poker player.
