Do you have a passion for food? Do you enjoy working with large groups of people? Do you have a flair for food presentation? If so, catering could be the perfect vocation for you! The food service industry is one of the fastest growing employment industries in the world. While there are many different types of catering jobs available, most require some form of culinary education or experience. This article focuses on the most popular types of catering jobs and the skills required to obtain them.

Catering Mangers are responsible for all aspects of catered events. A catering manager is required to hire, train, and schedule staff members. They work with clients to arrange catering details. Catering managers are also involved in both the set-up and tear-down of events; menu and costing development; customer service; and pricing and billing. Typically, a high school degree or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of two years catering experience and supervision duties.

Catering Sales Managers are responsible for building customer relations to obtain new and repeat business. They work directly with clients and with the marketing department of the catering business. Most catering sales manager positions require a degree in business, with a focus on sales and marketing. Typically, two to four years experience in the hospitality industry is required.

Banquet Managers supervise, manage, and oversee all aspects of banquet set-up and maintenance. These types of catering jobs are oftentimes found at hotels, resorts, and cruise lines. Typically, a high school degree or equivalent is required, along with a minimum of two years experience in a supervisory position, and five years experience in the food service industry.

Group Sales Managers work with large organizations such as Fortune 500 companies, cruise lines, airlines, etc. This position requires a person to be proficient at multi-tasking and the ability to work well under pressure. Typically, group sales managers are required to hold a four year degree in business, and possess a minimum of five years experience in the hospitality industry.

Private Event Directors are responsible for planning, selling, and coordinating all aspects of private events and meeting functions. Duties include menu planning and working directly with clients and staff members. This position requires a person who is able to multi-task, meet deadlines, and be proficient in communication and public relations. In order to land this job, you'll need a two-year Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years experience in food service or hospitality.
