Making The Most Of Software Titles With Resale Rights Print E-mail
Saturday, 30 June 2007
For some online marketers, e-books with resale rights just are not enough anymore. They want something dynamic that will give them many different kinds of products they can sell to all kinds of niche markets. Software titles with resale rights give you the ability to offer a product, that makes more products – I mean, how great is that?! More often than not, software titles with resale rights come in two versions – one that does not have a resale license, and one that does.

The version with master resale rights is usually double the price of the one without. Sometimes this resale license allows you to sell the software itself, or sell the product of the software if it makes a product, or both. The only problem with this kind of system, for the programmer at least, is you could easily copy the version that you technically should not resell, and resell it. For the most part, software titles with resale rights just blindly trust that you will not be dishonest and sell the cheaper version behind their back.

In addition, even if you do not have master resale rights, there is nothing stopping you from making the same product the other version would make and selling it anyways. Some software titles with resale rights have safeguards in place to discourage that kind of thing from happening, but there always seems to be a way around that.

Don't get me wrong, I am not recommending that you cheat the system – because if you do it, then you are just giving your customers the idea to do it themselves and steal your profits. What you should do instead, is make sure you are really picky about the software titles you purchase with the intent of reselling.

Ask the vendor what kind of safeguards they have in place to ensure you do not lose a profit. Some of the best ways I have seen software titles protect the documents produced by versions without resale rights, is through the use of a proprietary document format. Essentially, this limits how they can interact with the document by only giving them the option to view or print, and nothing more.

The document is then printed with a big warning stating that it is not for resale, and if they purchased this document, they should report the vendor. Now this warning could be covered up or removed if it is on a page that can be sacrificed. The best way to print this warning is on every single page and very close to the rest of the text, so that photocopying the document and trying to cover up the warning is pretty much futile.
