If you love people and food, becoming involved in the food catering business could provide you with endless rewards and gratification. There are numerous opportunities available in this field. Whether you work as a caterer for someone else or open your own catering business, chances are you will find this to be a fun career choice. Perhaps one of the best benefits of being involved in the food catering industry is the vast amount of people you will meet.

Usually, when people hire a caterer they are hosting a celebration event such as a birthday, anniversary, or job promotion. Other catered events include weddings, family reunions, fundraising events, racing events and music concerts. Celebrities frequently hire caterers for parties and other events. Just think how fun it would be to cater an event for your favorite celeb! While it takes time and experience to land a job at the posh catering businesses, you may still have opportunities to meet local celebrities through events you, or the company you work for, cater.

Although the food catering business is somewhat competitive in most locales, if you understand your market and cater to their needs, you can easily develop a devoted clientele  If you're lucky enough to not have much competition in your area, you could potentially be sitting on a gold mine if you open a catering business.

Owning your own catering business can be a rich and rewarding experience. If you possess a great deal of passion, but have a shoestring budget, you can still start your own catering business. Start small and market your services to local business owners. In order to do this you'll want to design a professional business card and brochure. Take them along with food samples and leave them with as many merchants as you can. Nothing opens doors faster than food -- especially if it's good food.

It's a good idea to develop a niche when starting a catering business. It is too difficult and costly to try and offer every type of food known to man. What is your signature dish? What foods can you offer that will leave a lasting impression? Find your strong points and develop your catering menu around your specialty.

Some people are strong in making Mexican dishes, while others can create tantalizing Italian foods. Maybe your specialty is pastries or vegetarian foods. Perhaps you would want to focus on being the only "Organic" catering service in town.

If owning your own business isn't of interest, there are many positions available in food catering. Some people prefer to stay behind the scenes and enjoy being a prep chef or cook. Others may have a knack for food design and the ability to make every dish pleasing to the eyes. Maybe your strong point is in serving food to guests and mingling with the crowd.

Whatever you enjoy and excel at, more than likely there is a position available in food catering. Isn't it time you start doing what you love?
